Message from the Program Chair - Program Update

HostingWand is an independent web hosting portal.

Our Annual General Meeting took place on September 27 with over 35 members attending. The new Board of Directors was announced including our new President for 2004-2005 - Mr. Rob Tait. Rob provided the members with the 2004-2005 priorities committed to by the new Board of Directors including: continuing to deliver a strong Program, increasing our local membership by 30%, rejuvenating the Student Program, and continuing to promote the I.S.P. Designation. Although once again quorum could not be attained, as we did not have 50 regular members in attendance, it was a good start to 2004-2005 with excellent feedback provided to the new Board of Directors.

On October 21 we held our first evening seminar entitled The New Discipline in IT: Applications Support and Maintenance. Our guest speaker was Dr. Peter Thompson, I.S.P., who is President, CEO and Founder of RIS (named one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies in 2001). Dr. Thompson delivered a compelling presentation on the need for applications support and maintenance to be recognized and managed as a true discipline. He has recently published his years of work in the field in a book entitled SMART Methodology: the Only Authoritative Guide to Creating a Successful Applications Support and Maintenance Environment. Dr. Thompson's presentation will be made available shortly at www.cips.ca/ottawa

We provided the above seminar for FREE to our CIPS (and fellow DPI) members. We hope to be able to do this for all 2004-2005 evening seminars so that our members continue to see value in their CIPS membership. Our November 18 event will also be provided FREE to CIPS (and DPI) members. Attendance for non-members is $45.

Our first breakfast Keynote event, which is a joint effort between CIPS and DPI, will be held Thursday, November 18 at the Ottawa Congress Centre. Our guest panel will include the Deputy CIO for the Federal Government of Canada along with his Executive Director of Architecture, a former Ontario CIO and the CCSO for the City of Ottawa, who will share with us the future of shared infrastructures in government. This interactive presentation will include discussions on the use of shared architectures and technologies to facilitate the transformation of business functions within both the Government of Canada, and other levels of government. Further details, including online registration, are available at www.cips.ca/ottawa under Events.

It is our commitment and goal, through the CIPS Ottawa Program, to meet the information needs of both technical and business professionals in the National Capital Region. We hope you continue to find value in all our 2004-2005 events.
